KOHLER has manufactured bathtubs since its founding in 1873 — the company literally started as a cast iron bathtub maker. Today, KOHLER offers everything from the simple, reliable Villager to the technologically advanced VibrAcoustic sound-therapy tub. This guide covers materials, styles, and the innovative technologies that set KOHLER apart.
KOHLER's heritage material. Cast iron tubs are made by pouring molten iron into a mold, then applying multiple layers of enamel. The result is a surface that's virtually indestructible — resistant to scratching, chipping, staining, and fading. Cast iron retains heat longer than any other tub material, keeping bathwater warm. The tradeoff: weight. A cast iron tub weighs 300-400+ lbs and requires adequate floor support.
Lightweight, warm to the touch, and available in more shapes and sizes than cast iron. KOHLER uses high-quality acrylic reinforced with fiberglass for structural integrity. Acrylic is easier to install (100-150 lbs) and costs less than cast iron. It's also the material used for most freestanding and specialty tubs.
| Factor | Cast Iron | Acrylic |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | 300-400+ lbs | 100-150 lbs |
| Heat retention | Excellent — water stays warm longer | Good — warm to initial touch |
| Durability | Virtually indestructible enamel | Durable but can scratch |
| Sound | Quiet — mass dampens noise | Can be noisy without insulation |
| Color options | Wide range of enamel colors | White is standard; limited colors |
| Price | Higher ($800-$3,000+) | Lower ($400-$2,000+) |
| Installation | May need floor reinforcement | Standard floor support is fine |
KOHLER's most versatile bathtub line. The Underscore is available as an undermount, drop-in, or freestanding tub in multiple sizes (60" and 66"). It's the platform for KOHLER's advanced hydrotherapy technologies — BubbleMassage and VibrAcoustic are available as add-ons. Clean, modern lines work in contemporary and transitional bathrooms.
The Villager is KOHLER's workhorse alcove bathtub in enameled cast iron. Standard 60" x 30" alcove installation, integral apron, slip-resistant bottom. It's the tub contractors trust for renovations and new construction. Simple, durable, affordable.
KOHLER offers freestanding tubs from sculptural modern designs to classic clawfoot styles. The Abrazo (acrylic, modern), the Iron Works Historic (cast iron, traditional), and the Ceric (lithocast, organic) are standouts. Freestanding tubs are the centerpiece of a luxury bathroom — plan plumbing access (floor-mount or wall-mount filler) before selecting your tub.
Unlike traditional whirlpool jets that push water, BubbleMassage releases thousands of tiny, heated air bubbles that gently massage the body. It's quieter, more hygienic (no water recirculation), and creates a champagne-like bathing experience. Available as a factory-installed option on select Underscore and other models.
KOHLER's most innovative bath technology. VibrAcoustic uses speakers built into the tub walls to transmit sound waves through the water, creating a full-body sound-therapy experience. Pair it with music via Bluetooth, or use preset therapeutic frequencies. Combined with chromatherapy (colored LED lighting), it transforms a bath into a multi-sensory wellness experience.
