KOHLER Bathtub Buying Guide: Materials, Sizes & Installation Types

Choosing the Perfect KOHLER Bathtub

A new bathtub transforms your daily routine and adds significant value to your home. KOHLER's bathtub lineup ranges from practical alcove tubs to statement-making freestanding designs. Here's how to find the one that fits your space, style, and budget.

Installation Types

Alcove Tubs fit between three walls and are the most common type. They're practical, space-efficient, and typically the most affordable option. The KOHLER Bellwether and Villager are popular alcove choices. Most can be paired with a shower for dual functionality.

Freestanding Tubs are the centerpiece of luxury bathrooms. They stand independently and can be placed anywhere with plumbing access. KOHLER's Abrazo, Ceric, and Memoirs Stately freestanding tubs range from contemporary to traditional styles.

Drop-In Tubs are installed into a custom surround or deck. They offer flexibility in surround materials (tile, stone, wood) and are popular in master bathroom renovations. The Archer drop-in is a perennial favorite.

Undermount Tubs are installed below a deck surface for a clean, integrated look. The rim is hidden, creating a seamless transition from surround to water.

Materials

  • Enameled Cast Iron — KOHLER's signature material. Extremely durable, retains heat beautifully, and resists scratches and chips. Heavier (300-400 lbs), so floor support should be verified. Lasts decades with minimal maintenance.
  • Acrylic — Lightweight, warm to the touch, and available in more shapes. Easier to install than cast iron. KOHLER acrylic tubs use a reinforced construction for strength and rigidity.
  • Lithocast — KOHLER's premium solid-surface material. Made from a single piece of stone-composite material, it's non-porous, incredibly smooth, and available in freestanding designs with ultra-thin walls.

Standard Sizes

  • 5-foot (60") — Standard alcove size. Fits most existing tub spaces without reframing. The most common choice for renovations.
  • 5.5-foot (66") — Extra length for taller users. Available in drop-in and freestanding styles.
  • 6-foot (72") — Luxury soaking length. Primarily freestanding and drop-in models for larger bathrooms.

Hydrotherapy Options

Many KOHLER tubs are available with built-in massage systems:

  • BubbleMassage — Air jets create thousands of warm bubbles for a gentle, all-over massage. Quieter and more subtle than water jets.
  • Whirlpool — Powerful water jets target muscles for deep tissue relief. Adjustable jet intensity and direction.
  • Heated Surface — Keeps the tub warm before, during, and after bathing. No more cold tub walls against your back.
